A couple of years ago I made cake balls for a baby shower and afterwards I vowed that I would never make another cake ball in my life. Why? Because it just ended up being way too much work…and I couldn’t seem to get them to turn out the way I wanted them. Then my sister told me about this method of using Mint Oreos to make cake balls. It sounded easy enough, so I decided to give it another try. I was happy to find that these Mint Oreo Truffles were super easy to make. Trust me when I say, if I can do it, anyone can. I really am not a baker (I prefer cooking over baking anyday), but this recipe was super easy to follow, and I learned a few tricks of the trade along the way that I wish I would have known the first time around. There really should be a book called “Cake ball making for Dummies”, because I sure felt like a dummy the first time I endeavored to make them
These Oreo Mint Truffles (cake balls) make the perfect Christmas treat! You could box them up and give them to neighbors, friends, family or whoever the heck you want. I promise that they will not be let down. You can get creative with these and decorate them however you’d like. I like to use white and dark chocolate to mix things up. I personally prefer the white chocolate, but that’s just me.
BTW…did I mention that there are only 3 ingredients in this Mint Oreo Truffle recipe…That’s always a plus!!! Just thought I better add in that little amazing detail 🙂
- 1 package mint Oreos
- 8 oz softened cream cheese
- 11 oz package of White Chocolate Chips and 11 oz Milk or Dark Chocolate Chips
- (can also use bakers chocolate bars
- Finely crush 2½ sleeves of Mint Oreos ( using a food proccessor would be the easiset method, but I just crush them with a metal whisk and fork or put them in a big ziplock bag and use a can or something else hard to crush them)
- Put the cream cheese in the microwave for about 30-45 seconds to soften it up a bit
- Add crushed oreos and mix thoroughly with an electic mixer
- Let dough sit in fridge for about an hour to firm up so that it will be easier to mold into balls
- Form dough into about 20-25 balls depending on how big you want them
- Place Oreo balls on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper.
- Cover with plastic wrap and place cookie sheet in freezer for about an hour
- Pour half of white Chocolate chips in a bowl and microwave for 30 seconds, then stir and microwave for another 30 seconds, and stir again
- Keep microwaving at 10 sec intervals (stirring in between) until chocolate chips are completely melted
- Dip Oreo balls one by one in melted white chocolate, and roll it with a spoon so that it is completely covered all the way around
- Then place back on wax paper
- If there are sill some small spots showing you can spoon some more chocolate over the top to cover exposed areas
- Dip half of the cake balls in white chocolate and then decorate how you want\
- (You can crumble up remaining oreos and sprinkle on top, use sprinkles, or melt some milk chocolate and drizzle on top)
- Then go through the same proccess with the dark/milk chocolate with remaining cake balls
- Allow to cool in refrigerator so chocolate sets
If you are drizzling chocolate on top of the cake balls and it is to thick (not runny enough for drizzling) add about a ½ to 1 teaspoon of oil and stir...this will make it creamier and better for drizzling
If you are going to decorate with sprinkles or crushed Oreo make sure to put them on when the chocolate is still warm and has not set so that the toppings will stick to the cake ball. If you wait till the chocolate has already set, it will be very hard to get anything to stay on top of the Oreo balls
